CALL TO ACTION FOR TWO MINUTES OR LESS

Thank you to all those who have completed the online demographic survey!

With this year's attorney registration statement, we included a link to an online demographic survey hosted by Survey Monkey. If you have not completed this voluntary and anonymous survey, please do so in the coming weeks as the survey will close on February 28. Higher participation will allow us to better understand and monitor shifts in the demographics of the Colorado bar.

To complete the survey, go to:
http://www.coloradosupremecourt.com/demographicsurvey.htm.
This short survey takes only 1-2 minutes to complete.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

In our first What You Need to Know of the year, we answer frequently asked questions about Rules C.R.C.P. 205.1 and 205.6: Temporary Practice by Out-of-State Attorney and Practice Pending Admission.
  • We’ve just hired an attorney to join our firm who is not licensed in Colorado. The attorney has filed an application for admission in Colorado. May the attorney practice law in Colorado before the attorney receives a Colorado license?

  • What if the attorney does not meet the practice time requirement for Practice Pending Admission?  Can he or she still offer legal services in Colorado under the Temporary Practice Rule?
Find answers to the questions above, including notable requirements and where to find more information here: What You Need to Know About Practice Pending Admission.

WHAT'S IN IT FOR ME? FIVE WAYS YOU WIN BY MENTORING

A mentor can teach a mentee best practices and help the mentee make connections that can lead to opportunity. However, to be a mentor, a busy professional must take time out of their schedule to teach someone else. It isn’t always obvious how the mentor will benefit. But, believe it or not, the benefits to the mentor are significant.

CAMP's Deputy Director Kelly Rosenberg goes in-depth about the continued importance of mentoring to the legal profession and how you will make a difference to your mentee with these five reasons to say “yes” to becoming a CAMP Mentor.

OUT OF STATE CLE COMPLIANCE CHANGES

In our last newsletter, we answered questions that arise when taking courses that have not been accredited in Colorado, including claiming credit for taking courses not accredited in the state and completing CLE requirements in another jurisdiction: What You Need to Know About Doing CLE Out of State.

Since the publishing of that article, the Board of Continuing Legal and Judicial Education (CLJE) convened in November 2018 to explore whether to adopt comity in Colorado. The Board agreed to recommend this policy to the Colorado Supreme Court Advisory Committee, where it was subsequently approved.

Effective January 1, 2019, comity permits Colorado-licensed lawyers to show compliance with their CLE obligations by meeting their CLE obligations in their home jurisdiction. Even with this change, certain criteria need to be met for comity to apply::
  1. The lawyer's primary business address on file with the Colorado Office of Attorney Registration is out-of-state;
  2. The lawyer's primary business address is within a jurisdiction he or she is licensed to practice ("home jurisdiction");
  3. The lawyer's home jurisdiction has mandatory CLE;
  4. The lawyer is in compliance with the mandatory CLE requirements of his or her home jurisdiction; and,
  5. The lawyer submits a certificate of good standing showing that he or she is in compliance with CLE in his or her home jurisdiction and provides a copy of a transcript covering his or her Colorado CLE three-year compliance period to the CLJE Office.

WAYS TO REDUCE STRESS IN 2019

New Year's Resolutions have existed for thousands of years; the tradition is shared by people and religions around the world. Unfortunately, research suggests that only a small percentage of us keep our resolutions.

This COLAP article describes how we can keep with tradition, while also keeping our resolutions and feeling proud of our accomplishments: Ways to Reduce Your Stress in 2019.
